Media Loves Bush’s Gracious 1993 Letter to Clinton Now, Why Not in 2000 Recount?
It’s a very nice note, and I’m glad it’s circulating now. I hope, but doubt, that Trump will follow Bush I’s example.
But I don’t remember this circulating much in November and early December of 2000 when Gore sued for a recount and his followers criticized the SCOTUS for not overturning Florida election law on appeal.
Throwing acid against load bearing walls is bad stuff. It’s bad when FDR launched a hate campaign against ‘nine old men’ on the Supreme Court. It’s bad when Trump calls an entire national election rigged, instead of pointing towards specific, documentable pockets of systemic fraud. It’s bad when people attack the legitimacy of W, falsely claiming that the court ‘chose the president’. It’s bad when people attack the legitimacy of O by choosing to ignore the clear constitutional principle that the law must respect the legal status documents of the individual states, for example a birth certificate from Hawaii. Our contending factions fling balloon filled with acid at each other and it splatters against foundational institutions of the republic. Reckless.
