NFL Kerfuffle is a Good Excuse to Reclaim Sundays
The controversy over the national anthem protests in the NFL has got me thinking…
What if hundreds of thousands of fans — who also happen to be Christians — finally said…
“I’ve had enough…”
“I’ve been watching too much football anyway…”
“So I’m going to tune out and start doing things on Sunday afternoon like getting to know my neighbors, serving people in need, and learning more about the Bible and how it applies to my life.”
And taking this thought experiment a little further…
What if all those people who have kids in sports programs finally said…
“You know, it’s time to do something…”
“I’m tired of all the Sunday games and practices and out of town tournaments…”
“My conscience has been bothering me for a long time about this anyway…”
“So, we’re done…”
“We’re done making so much of sports that it now consumes the Lord’s Day.”
“So… you can practice and have games Monday through Saturday, but you’re not having Sunday. Not with my kids, anyway.”
What if people actually started doing this en masse? Yes, the bold initiators would take some heat, but in so doing, they would lead the way to reclaiming Sundays.
And friends, think about it…
If we can’t apply Christ’s lordship to Sundays, how will we ever bring it to bear during the rest of the week?
