Trinitarian Disaster Relief
The brunt of Hurricane Irma is now past.
And that means disaster relief and recovery efforts are now in high gear.
As this takes place in my own Central Florida county, I can’t help but notice the Holy Trinity’s imprint on reality.
Our local sheriff had a clear message about the storm’s aftermath:
Don’t count on government officials to be there to save you.
He said further… it was a time for ‘neighbor to be helping neighbor.’
Now… that’s really quite an interesting thing for a sheriff to say…
The sheriff, you may recall, is essentially the most important of county officers…
He’s the bigwig…
He’s most noted as a chief law enforcement officer… but he also plays a fatherly and kingly role… as he looks out for the well-being of the citizens in his jurisdiction.
Yet, by exhorting neighbors to help neighbors, he recognizes the truth that his role has limits…
And he shows that there’s a centralization and decentralization that’s built into reality.
This order becomes evident during crises… as it’s obvious that no one person or institution can do it all.
But it’s rooted in a deeper reality of things…
A reality where there’s a unity and diversity…
… a unity of purpose and a diversity of how that purpose is fulfilled.
And this reality is grounded in the Triune God… where the Father rules, the Son redeems, and the Spirit leads and empowers.
This order is plain to see in a disaster, as all work to restore life to normalcy… with everyone contributing their individual gifts and abilities wherever they happen to be.
But the order is always there.
Much more could be said on this… but there are neighbors to help!
