Does Obama Care?
That is a good question, but maybe not the right question! Allow me to propose a different question – Do we care? Do we care enough about our health to change our eating, exercising, smoking, and drinking habits?
The intent of Obamacare was not to reduce our healthcare costs, but to provide affordable healthcare insurance to those who cannot afford coverage, or are unable to qualify for coverage, as a result of preexisting conditions.
Let’s think of this another way. The government pays for nothing. They merely take our taxes and Medicare premiums, then distribute the funds to us in the form of government services. What about the insurance companies? Like the government, they use our insurance premiums, paying them back to us in the form of healthcare services.
What about the healthcare community? Once again, there is no difference, because they take our co-pays and deductibles and collect the rest of their pay from the premiums and taxes we pay the government and insurance companies.
So, who is left? You and I, that’s who! So back to the posed question above, do we care? Given all the media attention, Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, water cooler arguments, etc., one would think we care. But frankly, I do not think we care. We spend more time bashing Obamacare than we spend in the gym. We are happy to stuff our faces with food, as much as we happily stuff our minds with endless political punditry.
If we want to make a dent in the cost of our national healthcare, then we need to accept personal responsibility for our excessive lifestyles. If we do, our need for medical services will diminish over time. This is what stewardship is about – managing the assets entrusted to us (our bodies/temples) so that we accomplish what the Lord put us here to accomplish!
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
